La Digue-

A tranquil sight is offered to those who spot La Digue from the water. The wild nature of the small island can already be glimpsed from afar and you can look forward to the coming days of vacation in pure idyll. Words can hardly describe the lifestyle on La Digue, because in many places the island is still as pristine as it was hundreds of years ago. Those who travel here get a real Robinson Crusoe feeling and find themselves in paradise.

With a total area of just 10 km² and around 3,000 inhabitants, La Digue is the fourth largest island in the Seychelles and the smallest of the three main islands. But the size doesn't stand in the way of their diversity. With the ferry you can reach La Digue in just 20 minutes from Praslin and enjoy the turquoise sea, imposing rocks and a happy atmosphere at the small, bustling ferry port as soon as you arrive.

The typical mode of transport for most locals and tourists is by bicycle. Many years ago the traditional ox carts were replaced on the island. These are rarely seen today and are mainly only used by farmers or for tourist purposes. Cars are also rather rare on La Digue, as the island is too small for conventional traffic and the roads are not very well developed. However, more and more often you come across smaller and larger golf carts, which mostly belong to the hotels on the island and are used as a means of transport for tourists.

Despite its manageable size, La Digue offers a new photo motif on almost every corner and you can hardly get enough of the endless green and turquoise blue. Probably the most famous advertising images of the Seychelles were created on La Digue. No wonder that filmmakers and professional photographers keep coming back to the tropical island and seeing it as the perfect location for their shoots.

The undisputed most beautiful beach on the island and consistently among the top 10 most beautiful beaches on earth is Anse Source d'Argent in L'Union Estate Park. This beach combines everything you can imagine as a dream beach. In the middle of blue lagoons stretch white sandy beaches, framed by a thicket of palm forests and huge surreally shaped granite rocks shoot up almost arbitrarily from the land masses and the sea. Immediately you feel overwhelmed by the beauty of nature and you can't help but feel deep relaxation and happiness. This beach alone is reason enough for many tourists to visit La Digue every year. This is a magical place even for the locals and many Seychellois on the island come here regularly to enjoy the picturesque surroundings in peace - a really special experience.

Of course, La Digue also offers many other dream beaches, all of which can be easily reached by bike. Seemingly endless white bays, one more beautiful than the next, make La Digue the perfect place to unwind. On many beaches you are often alone, you can relax in peace on the beach, look out for sea turtles and colorful fish in the offshore reefs or climb the granite rocks that are everywhere to snap some great holiday pictures. With a little luck, you can even see giant tortoises at the paradisiacal Anse Severe, curiously approaching you to get hold of a banana or fresh leaves.

The Veuve Reserve and L'Union Estate Park are the island's protected natural parks. Both are worth a visit because you have the chance to observe rare endemic animals and plants. In the Veuve Reserve you can see the Madagascar Foddy, the Paradise Fly Catcher and the beautiful white fairy tern, among others. In the L'Union Estate Park, many Aldabra giant tortoises live in an enclosure, which you can watch and feed with leaves or fruit. Here you can also get an insight into La Digue's colonial history. Countless coconut palms indicate that the site was previously used as a coconut and vanilla plantation. You can visit an old copra mill and a drying oven, where coconut oil and the core of coconuts are extracted and processed in the traditional way. In the park's Plantation House there is a small museum that tells about the history of the plantation and in the basement there is a small gallery that sells Seychelles motifs and other souvenirs.

What could be a nicer activity than watching the sunset on a tropical island in the evening? The idyllic Bellevue Restaurant offers the ideal location for this. Here you have the best view over the entire east side of the island and a spectacular view of the setting sun in all its red-orange hues. It is a special moment to look all the way to the sea and see the flying foxes, while enjoying a delicious cocktail and being pampered by the delicious Creole cuisine.
